Abstract

The viscosity of a solution of a polymer is a measure of its molecular weight. Changes in viscosity can indicate polymer degradation. The viscosity of a polyamide polymer membrane casting solution decreases after exposure to chlorine. The adverse effect of chlorine on the polymer structure, consequently, affects the membrane performance drastically. The measurement of solution viscosity, therefore, is a useful tool for screening polymers resistant to chlorine or other oxidants.
