Abstract

By using a portable laboratory fluid-bed dryer, it is possible to collect coconut pollen in the field, at rates of 55 to 60 g in 3 to 4 hours. Pollen collected this way has a viability similar to that of pollen from flowers dried for 40 hours on incubator shelves. It is suitable for immediate use or it may be stored. The technique opens new possibilities for hybrid seed production and for production of large breeding populations.
