Abstract

The ways in which bees get nectar and pollen from different flowers can be highly relevant to their pollinating effectiveness, and thus of economic importance. Many detailed studies have been made on foraging behaviour in Europe and North America, but comparatively few in the tropics. While studying the pollination of coconut in Jamaica, Professor Cameron Jay spent many hours sitting at the top of palms observing bees working the flowers. He describes here two foraging methods used by honeybees which seem to be previously unrecorded. The tongue is used to collect pollen, and nectar is collected while the bee hovers in the air as a humming-bird does.
