Abstract
After four decades of crusades against illiteracy, a fully literate society is still beyond reach. Nearly one-third of the world's population over the age of 15 remain illiterate. Unesco projects that by the year 2000, there will be a billion illiterates. Some 98 per cent of these illiterates reside in developing countries. The world's total 889 million illiterates in 1985, are unequally distributed between Asia (75 per cent), Africa (18 per cent) and Latin America (5 per cent). Women form a disproportionate share among illiterates and their share is increasing. While women comprised 58 per cent of illiterates in 1960, this figure jumped to 63 per cent in 1983 (Stromquist, 1990, p. 93). While the minimal goal of achieving functional literacy is still far away, there are now needs for ecological literacy, gender literacy and cultural literacy.
