Abstract

In this article we argue that the cleavage model of Lipset and Rokkan still merits the attention of students of contemporary electoral behavior. In particular, we argue that the normative and institutional elements inherent in the model may be more relevant than the social base of cleavages. However, while the increasing influence of the mass media affects the relationship between parties and voters, it may also have consequences for the conceptualization and design of our analytical models.
