Abstract
As the first speaker at the workshop on “Poleward Flows Along Eastern Ocean Boundaries,” I was asked to “get things started” by giving an historically based overview. I felt that exposing my naivete was not inconsistent with the task and stated that two questions hovered in my mind: What is meant by “poleward flows” in the context of this workshop?; and why does the topic warrant a workshop? My geographical focus is the eastern ocean boundaries at low- and mid-latitudes; other authors reddress this parochialism.
