Abstract
A theory of exciton-phonon interaction in quantum wells is presented. Bound states of excitons in polar quantum wells are investigated by using an improved variation method. The interaction with both interface and confined longitudinal-optical phonons are included in consideration. A general expression of the bound-state energy of the exciton in a quantum well is obtained. The theoretical result is shown to be valid throughout the entire well-width range. Based on the theory, general properties of the exciton--optical-phonon coupling systems in quantum wells are discussed in detail. Some interesting futures of the system are concluded.
