Abstract

The reduction waves of 5-nitroisophthalic acid and 2-nitroterephthalic acid were studied in aqueous buffered solutions. By means of polarography there was shown in these solutions the presence of two forms, whose ratio varies with the pH. The determination of 5-nitroisophthalic acid in the presence of 2-nitroterephthalic acid may be carried out by means of derivative polarography in the pH range of 9.2-10.2. There were found optimum conditions for the determination of 5-nitroisophthalic acid in the nitrated hydrolysate of the polyester fiber. The isophthalic acid content was determined in 49 samples of polyester fibers.
