Abstract
The polarizing properties of a device made up of a high-index birefringent planar waveguide and a polished-type fiber coupler are analyzed. Approximate analytical formulas are derived for the width and the relative spacing of the TE and TM coupling resonances between the fiber and the waveguide. Experimental results are also shown and a practical in-line fiber polarizer based on this principle is demonstrated. >
