Abstract
Recently there have been a number of reports dealing with the measurement of polarization dispersion in long lengths of single-mode fiber.1,2 When chromatic dispersion is negligible, such as in coherent lightwave systems or in direct detection systems with dispersion-shifted fiber, polarization dispersion is expected to limit system performance.3 This occurs because the receiver processes two signals, corresponding to propagation along the two principal polarizations states of the fiber.
