Abstract

AbstractCircularly polarized antennas are the key elements for current and future wireless communication systems. This chapter discusses the advantages of circularly polarized (CP) antennas over linearly polarized antennas. The wide use of CP antennas for various wireless systems including satellite communications, mobile communications, wireless local area networks (WLAN), radio frequency identification (RFID), wireless power transmission, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), and global positioning system (GPS) is first explained. Advantages of polarization reconfigurable antennas over fixed circularly polarized antennas are given. The design, simulation, and measurement of a few polarization switchable antennas between linear polarization (LP) and circular polarization (CP) (left hand circular polarization (LHCP) and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP)) are discussed in detail. The use of compact and wideband polarization reconfigurable antennas for portable devices is also discussed. Later Polarization reconfigurability is shown in active antennas which is beneficial for advanced wireless systems. Few oscillator-type polarization switchable active antennas are reported in this chapter.
