Abstract

Humic substances (HS) are products formed by the microbial degradation and biochemical rearrangement of plant material and dead organisms in soil (Ziechmann 1980; Stevenson 1982) and water (Christman and Gjessing 1983). HS derive their heteropolycondensed structure from their parent compounds such as lignins, tannins, proteins, fatty acids, carbohydrates and numerous other organic and inorganic substances (Gjessing 1976). The variety of starting materials and the huge number of possible reaction pathways (Flaig 1964) are the reason for the difficulties in suggesting a precise structure, which usually is no problem in the field of pure chemical compounds.
