Abstract
The article discusses the process of formation of the institution of detection of crimes and persons committing them at the dawn of the formation of Russian statehood. Consideration of this process through the prism of the socio-historical environment in which the development of Russian society took place made it possible to identify the patterns of its development. The study showed that the process of establishing the institution of search activities has gone through several stages of its development from elementary methods to covert search activities based on the work of professional police officers, enshrined in regulatory legal acts.
