Abstract

This paper suggests several ways in which poetry may be used as a creative vehicle for self-discovery; presents by example the revelation of adolescent conflicts relating to death, sex-role identity, and conformity as expressed in poems composed by the adolescent client; and discusses several therapeutic implications of the use of poetry in counseling. Poetry therapy is discussed within the framework of actualizing counseling, the primary treatment modality.
