Abstract
The earliest abnormality associated with Alzheimer’s Disease is the presence of hyperphosphorylated pretangle tau in locus coeruleus neurons [1]. Human brain studies reveal that pretangle tau in locus coeruleus neurons spreads to other brain regions resulting in memory loss and cognitive decline [1]. Locus coeruleus activity occurs in novelty- and stress-related patterns [2], and its neuron numbers and fiber density predict human cognition before death [3, 4, 5]. In an animal model that captures the features of human pretangle tau [6], we ask if locus coeruleus activity influences the effects of pretangle tau.
