Abstract

New information on the etiology, prevention and management of lower respiratory infections has become available over the past three to four years. This editorial will try to put into perspective developments in the following four areas: 1) the increased resistance of pneumococci to penicillin; 2) results of recent pneumococcal vaccine studies; 3) TWAR strains ofChylamydia psittaci as causative agents in atypical pneumonia; and 4) respiratory infections, particularly tuberculosis, in patients with AIDS.
