Abstract

The preparation of plutonium hexafluoride by the fluorination of plutonium trifluoride, tetrafluoride, or dioxide is described, and the effect of temperature, rate of flow of fluorine, duration of reaction, and nature of the starting material is discussed in some detail. The formula PuF 6 has been confirmed by chemical analysis. Some properties of plutonium hexafluoride are described, these include the vapour pressure, melting-point, decomposition under α-particle irradiation, and reactions with water and sulphuric acid.
