Abstract

How does philosophy in Australia treat the issue of how humans can or should relate to the natural world? The question is particularly interesting in the light of current interest in the environment, and because of the presence in this country of two cultures, Aboriginal and white, which contrast markedly on the issue of relations to the land. Philosophy in Australia is not simply Western philosophy. On this issue Aboriginal philosophies of nature must be considered. In this article I want to discuss the two Australian philosophical traditions, and the conflict between them, by focusing on two figures, one historical and one contemporary, which will help to crystallise aspects of the opposition in which they stand.
