Abstract

1. 1. Platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity was estimated in 74 patients with affective disorders: 34 unipolars, 16 bipolars, 20 cyloid psychotics and 4 unclassified affective psychosis. The MAO activity was found to be lower in the cyloid psychotics while no difference was found between the other groups. 2. 2. It was further found that 6 patients who had attemted suicide by “active” methods had lower MAO activity than those who had attemted suicide by “passive” methods (n=9) or those without any previous history of suicide attempts (n=59). 3. 3. Patients reciving lithium were found to have lower platelet MAO activity than those who were not.
