Abstract

The facility includes two gas guns: 63.5 mm diameter x 2.5 m long and 101.6 mm diameter x 3.4 m long. Maximum projectile velocities for usual projectiles and normal operating pressurs are 0.3 mm/μs or 0.5 mm/μs, respectively. The barrel of the 63.5 mm diameter gun is slotted to prevent projectile rotation. Wave profiles are measured with three interferometer systems: a normal displacement interferometer (NDI), a normal velocity interferometer (NVI), and a transverse displacement interferometer (TDI). The light source for all three systems is a one watt argon ion laser. Principal applications of the facility have been to investigations of pressure‐shear waves, stress‐strain curves at strain rates of 105 s−1, and dislocation mobility in single crystals.
