Abstract

If a new pipe material is to be used for gas or water service, a number of factors must be considered. Some of the factors affecting plastic pipe performance are: Installation, long-term strength, aging resistance, chemical resistance, type of failure, permeability, and quality control procedures. These factors are all susceptible to laboratory evaluation, and it is the purpose of this paper to study such a laboratory evaluation. Of course, there are other factors (such as cost) entering into the suitability of a new material for gas or water distribution piping, but these are not subjects for laboratory study. Although a laboratory study can supply considerable information about a material, the final choice of a material is often ultimately a matter of engineering judgment, based on its projected use and the conditions under which it will perform.
