Abstract

The paper identifies how the changes in automotive design criteria, specifications, manufacturing methods and occupant safety considerations are likely to affect resin selection and fabrication for car instrument panels. The formal Federal performance specifications, affecting impact performance, require that the instrument panel within the head impact area be impacted by a 15 lb head-form at a relative velocity of 15 mph. In this test the deceleration of the head must not exceed 80g continuously for more than 3 msec. For the covering abstract see IRRD 864502.
