Abstract

Abstract Transient increases in plasma thyroxine (T4) concentrations and gill sodium-potassium-dependent adenosine triphosphatase ([Na+K]-ATPase) activity in captive alevins and young juveniles of pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha occurred during the period when development of salinity tolerance and seaward migration is observed. Plasma triiodothyronine (T3) concentration generally decreased during this time. Maximal values of plasma T4 concentration and gill (Na+K)-ATPase activity coincided with complete absorption of the yolk sac and final differentiation of the abdominal body wall. These findings suggest that a process similar to the smolt transformation of congeneric species may occur in juvenile pink salmon prior to seawater entry.
