Abstract

A plasma produced by a Nd:YAG laser beam has been characterized by means of a Langmuir probe. The diagnostics method has been applied in the region of ion saturation current of the I–V curve, because for probe potentials lower than the floating potential the electron current cannot be measured. The ion current was redefined by considering the ion sound velocity (according to the Bohm criterion) and the drift velocity due to the adiabatic expansion and Coulomb acceleration. The ion signal has been used to determine the plasma parameters. A comparison with the conventional analysis will be carried out, in order to describe the advantages and disadvantages.
