Abstract

Abstract Au/TiO2 nanocomposite was obtained by green synthesis method using Averrhoa bilimbi fruit and Pandanus amaryllifolius leaves extracts. Averrhoa bilimbi fruit extract acts as a weak base source in the formation of TiO2 nanoparticle (NP). Pandanus amaryllifolius leaves extract plays an important role as reducing and stabilizing agent in Au nanoparticle (AuNP) formation on TiO2 NP surface under sodium light irradiation. Au/TiO2 nanocomposite was characterized by UV–Vis spectrophotometer, UV–Vis DRS, SEM-EDX, and TEM. AuNP has the maximum wavelength at 547 nm confirmed by UV–Vis spectrophotometer. Au/TiO2 nanocomposite has the band gap energy of 2.87 eV. Characterization of SEM-EDX and TEM showed the morphology, the presence and the particle size of Au on the TiO2 surface. The photocatalytic activity was modelled for methylene blue degradation under the sodium light irradiation for 60 min. The photocatalytic activity of Au/TiO2 nanocomposite was 2.17 times higher than TiO2 NP. The methylene blue degradation percentage using Au/TiO2 nanocomposite and TiO2 NP were 88.0 and 40.6%, respectively. Kinetics of methylene blue photodegradation followed the second order reaction.
