Place of Matsepe's novels in the development of the Northern-Sotho novel

Abstract

The literary works of O.K. Matsepe, 1954–1974, occupy a central position in the development of Northern-Sotho prose fiction. Their prominence is due to Matsepe's distinctive craftsmanship, his wide knowledge of traditional lore, and his outstanding vocabulary. The choice of themes and milieus for his works distinguishes him from his predecessors and contemporaries. His ability to weave complex plots, his dynamic characterization, and his skilful use of the narrating character further add prominence to his works. What raises his literary works in particular above those of other Northern-Sotho novelists is his insight into human life—his world view—a feature that one looks for in vain in the works of other Northern-Sotho novelists.
