Abstract
Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) is a 41 amino acid peptide (i.e., small protein) that plays an integral role in modulating the stress response in humans. CRF was first isolated for its role in regulating pituitaryadrenal axis activity by modulating the release of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) from the pituitary gland. ACTH in turn stimulates the production and release of cortisol (the primary glucocorticoid in humans) from the adrenal cortex. Subsequently, a more widespread role for CRF in coordinating the stress response has been described.
