Abstract

Recently, the discrepancy between standard intranuclear cascade model predictions and experimental data for the pion multiplicity in central nucleus-nucleus collisions has been interpreted as a manifestation of compression effects. We explore here alternative effects, involving pion reabsorption by two nucleons, off-mass shell effects and renormalization of the pion sources inside a dense nuclear medium.
