Abstract

For the flux pinning enhancement of (Sm 0.5Y 0.5)Ba 2Cu 3O 7−δ superconductors we have developed a fabrication method of zone-melting-growth with CeO 2 addition to the calcined (Sm 0.5Y 0.5)Ba 2Cu 3O 7−δ powder. To analyze the effect of CeO 2 addition, a zone-melted sample without CeO 2 addition was fabricated using the same process. Microstructure analysis of CeO 2 added sample showed that fine ellipsoidal (Sm 0.5Y 0.5) 2BaCuO 5 inclusions were uniformly dispersed in a large (Sm 0.5Y 0.5)Ba 2Cu 3O 7−δ grain. Magnetization hysteresis was measured to analyze flux pinning effect using a SQUID magnetometer. At 10 K and 10 kG the sample with CeO 2 addition showed two times larger magnetization hysteresis than the sample without CeO 2 addition.
