Abstract

Surfaces exert an ordering influence on adsorbed molecules. The macroscopic confinement in two dimensions, in combination with a distribution of adsorption sites of two- and three-dimensional microscopic geometries, and the presence of surface-specific unidirectional forces, results in a rich photophysical and photochemical behaviour of aromatic molecules in the adsorbed state.
