Abstract
Herein, we report bio-mediated production of Pt nanoparticles and Au/Pt BMNPs using aqueous extract of Syzygium aromaticum (clove) buds. The presence of phenolic compounds, mainly eugenol was responsible for reduction of metal ions as confirmed through FTIR spectroscopic analysis. The appearance of single SPR band in UV–Visible spectra revealed the alloy nature of BMNPs. Further, microscopic analysis showed the dependence of concentration, pH and temperature on morphology and size of the particles. Other techniques such as XRD, XPS, Zeta potential and cyclic voltammetry were employed to scrutinize the structural and compositional features of the NPs. Au/Pt BMNPs showed good anti-oxidative potential by inhibiting DPPH (IC50-27.2 μg/mL) and ABTS (IC50-14 μg/mL). The antibacterial activity was also investigated, and the zone of inhibition was maximum for Au/Pt BMNPs against Gram negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa; 18 mm) and Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus; 16 mm) bacteria. Additionally, Au/Pt BMNPs (96% degradation in 6 min) exhibited better catalytic efficiency for the reduction of PNP compared to monometallic Pt NPs (92% degradation in 10 min). In conclusion, our results reveal better potential efficacy of Au/Pt biosynthesized BMNPs due to the synergistic interactions between monometallic components.
