Abstract
An experiment was undertaken to assess the effects of 8 days artificial water-logging under natural field conditions on physiological traits of 12 pigeon pea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] genotypes during rainy seasons of 2011–2012 and 2012–2013. The physiological traits were significantly affected by waterlogging. Under normal conditions highest values for net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), quantum efficiency (QE) and water use efficiency (WUE) were observed in ICPL 20241, transpiration rate (E) in KPBR 80-2-1, carboxylation efficiency (CE) in ICPL 20128 and greening index (GI) in ICPH 2431. However, after recovery from water-logging PN, gs and QE were higher in KPBR 80-2-1, intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), WUE in ICPL 20241, E and CE in ICPL 20128, and GI in ICPL 87051. Four genotypes, viz., KPBR 80-2-1, ICPL 20241, ICPL 20128 and ICPL 87051 were identified as tolerant to water-logging over the remaining genotypes.
