Abstract
Species in the legume genera Aeschynomene and Sesbania can form nodules on both stems and roots. The cortical cells of stem nodules contain numerous chloroplasts, therefore it seems likely that energy for N2 fixation originates in situ. The objective of this study was to verify that photosynthesis occurs in stem nodules, and to determine whether parameters of N2 fixation differ between stem and root nodules.
