Abstract
Background: Although echo-Doppler recordings of mitral inflow patterns are often employed clinically to identify “diastolic dysfunction”, abnormal flow profiles are seen in patients with a diverse set of cardiovascular disorders. Because of difficulties in determining the effect of isolated hemodynamic changes on mitral inflow variables, we used a validated cardiovascular simulation to assess the effects of specific physiologic parameters on parameters of LV filling. Method: The simulation was used to test the impact of four hemodynamic variables on deceleration time (DT), E and A wave velocities, and the E:A ratio: total body blood volume, LV diastolic stiffness (indexed by stiffness constant β), systemic vascular resistance (SVR) and pulmonary artery resistance (PVR).
