Abstract
Apart from an occasional lizard running across them, the blackboards of the Physics Department at Dar es Salaam University look familiar enough, containing the usual scrawl of quantum mechanics and Maxwell's equations. Yet only a short walk away, in the surrounding bush, a woman is pounding maize outside a mud hut, and twenty miles up the road a nomadic herdsman grazes cattle, their way of life differing little from that of their ancestors.
