Abstract
One of the earliest and most important contributions of physics to agriculture was in defining how water evaporates from crops – of considerable importance in planning the amounts and timing of irrigation requirements. Some 40 years ago H L Penman of Rothamsted Experimental Station combined the concepts of energy-driven evaporation (considering the solar and thermal radiation balance) and diffusion of water vapour down a humidity gradient from crop to atmosphere.
