Abstract
You have brought the communication from Professor Berry and Dr Shepherd (Physics Bulletin August 1981 p238) to my attention presumably because I have served as Chairman of the Defence Scientific Advisory Committee, and because full-time defence scientists are not able to reply themselves under the normal rules of the Civil Service. I do find myself in disagreement with most of what they say, but will confine myself to the issue which is new from what I can remember in the 1930s and indeed the 1950s.
