Abstract

The opinion is frequently expressed in Physics Bulletin that the decline in the number of physics students will result in a shortage of physicists in industry. The real situation is that an over-supply of physicists, and other scientists, has forced down the level of salaries to an extent that many British scientists find unacceptable, and that school leavers are partly, at any rate, reacting appropriately.
