Abstract

The paper reviews a few selected problems connected with electronic and magnetic properties of semimagnetic semiconductors (SMSC) and their applications. Mostly narrow-gap, mercury and lead based SMSC are considered. Behaviour of impurity states are summarized. A new effect, zero field splitting observed in PbMnS and PbMnTe, is described. In magnetic properties the role of long range interaction and the influence of hole concentration on magnetic properties is reviewed. The application of HgMnTe and HgCdMnTe as a material for infrared detectors and lead based SMSC for infrared lasers is discussed.
