Abstract

Realistic channel models are prerequisites for system design and performance analysis of new indoor, personal, and mobile radio communications systems. Channel models should rely on the physical understanding of the radio wave propagation process which has to be developed from both theory and measurements. This allows a description of the essential characteristics pertinent for communication systems analysis in terms of a few functions and parameters. Foremost among these functions is the complex channel impulse response. Since its impact on radio communication systems is so profound, our main goal is to derive an accurate model of this function. To this end, a description of the wave propagation process resulting in different impulse response characteristics is given for macro, micro and inhouse channels. Differences in the propagation process between these channel types are analyzed, leading to different impulse response characteristics. The influence on wideband communications systems design is discussed. >
