Abstract

Water shortage is among the most dominant environmental constraints for grape production. Even in moderate temperate climates, grapevines often face some degree of drought stress during the growing season. The large genetic diversity of available grapevine species and cultivars and their characteristic geographical distribution may indicate different strategies to cope with the regional climate and its limitations for production. It is therefore likely that grapevine cultivars from different origines may have evolved different ways to adapt to dry soil conditions.
