Abstract

Compact expressions for the cross-section for photoproduction of pions from complex nuclei with a configuration of closed shells plus equivalent nucleons are obtained in impulse approximation considering all types of angular momentum coupling between the nucleons. These formulae enable numerical calculation for nuclei with any number of equivalent nucleons once certain single-particle transition probabilities in the corresponding shell are calculated; these probabilities are tabulated for some particular cases. The amplitudes of Chew et al. which are found valid up to 500 MeV are used for numerical calculations for the 60 Ni 28(γ, π − 60 Cu 29 reaction. Comparison with available experimental data indicates a definite preference to square well functions over the oscillator functions in the 2p shell.
