Abstract

We report the concept for a device to simplify the receiver in fiber-optic radio frequency (RF) transmission systems. We present a photonic RF mixer based on metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) photodetectors, by a brief theoretical analysis of the principle and performance of the device. The experimental result shows good agreement with the calculation. Our experiment demonstrated mixer conversion efficiency of -12 dB, and we conclude that -10 dB is achievable in optimum operational conditions.
