Abstract

Dissociation of perfluorocyclobutane into cation pairs and neutral fragments following the C and F K-shell excitation was investigated using the photoelectron–photoion–photoion coincidence (PEPIPICO) technique. Based on the analysis of islands in the PEPIPICO spectra, fragmentation pathways of the molecular dication were determined. Two characteristic series of the pathways, i.e., fission of F atom(s) followed by charge separation and elimination of CF2 or CF3 followed by charge separation, were identified. The symmetric fission of the molecular dication was found only for the C 1s excitation.
