Abstract

The photodegradation of styrene copolymers containing unsaturated ketones (methyl vinyl ketone, methyl isopropenyl ketone, phenyl vinyl ketone, benzylacetone and benzylacetophenone) as well as graft terpolymers with butadiene rubber has been investigated. It has been established that the presence of diene bonds has no influence on photodegradation of these copolymers. The photodegradation curves are described by the equation p = At K , where p is the degree of photodegradation, t is irradiation time and A and K are constants. It has been proved that the constant A depends on the quantity and type of the unsaturated ketone in the copolymer and that K is independent of these factors. The constant K varies in the range 0·4–0·5.
