Abstract

UV irradiation of 2-bromothiophene or 3-bromothiophene in various organic solvents produces thiophene as one of the reaction products. The likely mechanism in the case of 2-bromothiophene involves the formation of a π-complex between the thienyl radical and the bromine atom.
