Abstract

Photoconductivity was detected in solid xenon for phonon energies E ⪢ E G = 9.28 eV at 135°K. E G is the energy gap between the uppermost valence band (Γ - 8) and the lowest conduction band (Γ + 6). This determination is in good agreement with energy gap estimates based on the series limit of the Wannie exciton bands ( E G = 9.29 ev).
