Abstract

AbstractRecent research and development within The National Cash Register Company has resulted in a new technique for the storage and dissemination of microdocuments. This new technique, Photochromic Micro‐Images (PCMI), had made very high‐density document storage feasible at linear reductions of 200:1, representing an area reduction of 40,000:1. Features of the PCMI process are described. Next, micro‐image system elements are reviewed with respect to their basic functions and potential incorporation into complete micro‐image systems. Finally, some potential future applications of microimages in the fields of document storage and retrieval, libraries, and microform publishing are discussed and explored.
