Abstract

Pyrimidine residues in tobacco mosaic virus ribonucleic acid were labeled with tritium at the 5 position. Following exposure of the labeled virus to ultraviolet light within a biologically significant dose range, the ribonucleic acid was extracted with phenol and digested with a mixture of enzymes. The photoproducts were isolated by paper and column chromatography. The results demonstrate the formation of uridine hydrate and at least two other photoproducts. On Bio-Gel P-2 chromatography, these photoproducts appear to be the approximate size of UpU. No significant amount of ultraviolet reversible pyrimidine dimers is formed.
