Abstract

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) for hydrocarbon solar fuels is one of the most effective strategies to solve the energy crisis and replenish the carbon cycle. To expand its practical application sphere which is limited by low yield and competitive reaction, it is of great importance to comprehensively understand the CO2RR mechanism and the promotion strategies. In this review, we first summarize the concept of photocatalytic CO2RR and the exploration of related mechanisms. Secondly, the factors affecting the efficiency of photocatalytic CO2RR are analyzed and discussed, mainly including charge separation, morphological structure, visible light, and CO2 adsorption. Then, the competitive reaction to photocatalytic CO2RR and the solutions for inhibiting HER are analyzed and presented respectively. Last but not least, the challenges and limiting factors for the industrial application of photocatalytic CO2RR are analyzed and summarized, and we put forward a CO2RR industrial route of steel and chemical co-production to give a reference for CO2 cyclic utilization.
